Did You Know?
Medical emergencies in the Dental Practice that have been reported include Vasovagal Syncope (fainting) (63%), Angina (9%), Hypoglycaemia (8%), Epileptic Seizures (6%), Choking (5%), Asthma (5%) and Anaphylaxis (3%).
Vasovagal Syncope is the most common emergency, accounting for approximately two thirds of all emergencies reported.

Course Content
Irish Heart Foundation/American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider
* One and two rescuer Adult CPR
One and two rescuer Child CPR
One and two rescuer Infant CPR
Adult, Child and Infant recovery position
Adult, Child and Infant choking (conscious and unconscious)
Safe and effective use of an AED
Special considerations when using an AED
Use of face masks & bag-valve-mask devices
Skills group practice
Peer group practice
MCQ Written exam
Medical Emergencies in the Dental Practice
The Primary Survey ABCDE acronym (Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Expose & Examine)
Oxygen Therapy (Airway management, use of Oropharyngeal Airway (OPA), use of BVM & Oxygen cylinder size)
Anaphylaxis
Epilepsy/Seizures
Diabetic Emergency
Angina
Asthma
Heart Attack
Addisonian Crisis
Stroke (FAST assessment)
Administration and use of Emergency Drugs Kit (Administered by Dental Practitioners but all staff aware of their uses and functions)

Method of Delivery
The course is facilitated by a PHECC practitioner who is an Irish Heart Foundation/American Heart Association registered instructor who will use PowerPoint presentation, IHF/AHA dvd and practical sessions to guide you through the course(s)
Certification
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be issued with the following:
Certificate in BLS for Healthcare Provider from Irish Heart Foundation/American Heart Association
Certificate in Medical Emergencies in Dental Practice from Vital Obs Donegal.
Certificate in Medical Emergencies in Dental Practice and Administration of Medication in the Emergency Drug Kit (Dental Practitioners only) from Vital Obs Donegal.
This carries 5 hrs or 5 accredited CPD points for Dental Practitioners.
All certificates are valid for 2 years.
